Charitable giving: Guidelines

The Energy for Others fund supports health and human-service programs in communities where our employees work and live.

Energy for Others will forward funds designated by employees to any U.S.-based charitable non-profit. Energy for Others also has a pool of funds to which charities can submit requests.

Groups that want to submit a request must meet three guidelines:

  • Be a tax exempt 501 (c)(3) organization.

  • Be able to provide proof of tax-exempt status.

  • Provide a budget, including sources of funding and all expenses.

Also, we’ve outlined program-eligibility guidelines with preferences for program funding, as well as restrictions and exclusions.

Preferences

We prefer to:

  • Make contributions to groups in the areas of health and human services and, sometimes may choose to contribute to programs that promote public safety and the environment.

  • Fund specific programs, projects, services or events that help people or groups in need.

Restrictions and exclusions

In most cases, we exclude requests that benefit:

  • Individuals;

  • Endowment funds;

  • Private foundations, United Way or other federated campaigns; and

  • Programs or activities that are discriminatory based on age, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, physical or mental disabilities, race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, or political affiliation.

In most cases, we don't provide funds for:

  • General-operating support;

  • Travel, loans or loan guarantees, or liquidation costs;

  • Capital or construction campaigns;

  • Furniture, fixtures, carpeting, appliances or other such equipment;

  • Natural gas or electricity costs;

  • Multi-year commitments;

  • Special events that provide extensive benefits; or

  • Arts and cultural groups, educational institutions, or business, civic or trade groups.

Energy for Others requires that you use funding within one year of receipt. We ask agencies to provide information on how the contribution was used and to submit any support materials.
